Every now and then the sports world is blessed with a phenomenon that can dominate the spotlight. The Rally Monkey, Dontrelle Willis, and Turk Wendell brushing his teeth in between innings have all given sports fans and analysts something to talk about, but inevitably lost their luster. Now we look back at them and smile, remembering how great they were at the time, and how inexplicably unimportant they were in the end.
Tim Tebow is a great athlete, celebrity, and all around person; I really like the guy and hope he achieves everything he desires in his life. That being said, I think in the end he will be delegated to the back seat becoming another sports phenomenon that everyone loved at one time. Just to clarify, when I speak of him being a phenomenon I’m talking about his NFL career. Tebow may be the best College Football player that ever suited up. Every year while he was there, the Florida Gators had a shot to win the National Championship (they did twice) and Tebow was a legitimate Heisman candidate (he won once, maybe should have won twice). No one will argue with the fact that he was a legendary college player. Unfortunately the NFL is a different game. When it comes down to it, Tebow is just not an NFL quarterback.
Yes, Tebow has had success in his short NFL career as a starter. He has pumped life into a Broncos team that needed it desperately. However, I believe that it is only a matter of time until NFL defensive coaches find a way to slow him down. They will find a way to make him throw the ball, and he will eventually falter. The Broncos next four games are against the Dolphins, Lions, Raiders, and Chiefs. I fully expect Tebow to lead them to win at least two of those games, maybe even three. I think that if you have the opportunity to start him in your fantasy league over this time you absolutely should. Conversely, in the weeks after that when he faces the Jets, Chargers, Vikings, and Bears, you should do all you can to leave him on the bench or trade him to whomever you are playing that week. After a few weeks of success his flaws will be shown, and taken advantage of.
Like I said before, I like Tim Tebow, and I wish him all the luck; but I don’t believe that he will be successful in the long run. If I am wrong I will be happy to admit it, it has happened before. I believe though that he is a temporary phenomenon that fans love to root for, but will be pushed aside once he is unavoidably pushed into mediocrity by the skills of NFL defenses. I know many will disagree with me (even some of those in my own family), but I can’t help but agree with many of the NFL analysts around the country that don’t see Tebow having a great future in the NFL. I really wouldn’t mind if I was wrong, because I would like to see him succeed, but in the end I think Tim Tebow’s NFL career will be filed away with such greats as the Macarena and Crystal Pepsi.
